| The upgrading of our capacities and capabilities improves your competitive edge as well as ours.
When GM Scott unveiled its new $4m meat processing unit it also hired 35 new employees. This undertaking raised our lamb processing capacity to 3,500 daily. Our capabilities anticipate future needs and standards. Our new state of the art processing systems are the most hygienic and efficient offered in the southern hemisphere. Manual slaughtering has been entirely replaced. All meat products are completely sealed. We can produce gas flushed, cryovac sealed lamb products that exactly meet client requirements for both domestic and export markets. And as a very desirable side effect, the workload of the slaughtermen has been altered so that they may continue in this career all the way through to retirement.
This is one example of the forward thinking, proactive attitude that directs the way GM Scott does business. Its investment in new technologies and expanded abilities has always followed an undertaking of meticulous analysis and been incorporated into a controlled expansion program. Here is the story of what we have done to increase what we can do for you.
The original business at Cootamundra employed 4 people and processed 15 cattle and 200 lambs per day. In our first 3 years, we add chillers, a by-products plant, batch cookers and ancillary equipment. We turned ourselves into a viable player in a competitive market.
In 1988, a full automated lamb floor with an inverted dressing system was installed. Our processing capacities rose to 2,900 lambs and 80 cattle per day.
A new beef floor was built in 1991. Production reached 200 cattle and 3200 lambs per day and 6 additional chillers were constructed to manage this increase. Our workforce climbed to 200 staff and a new amenities block was built to house them.
Elevated sheep yards were built in 2000, to hold 3000 lambs. In 2002, a new by-products plant and an Hp boiler were installed. Our 13th chiller, added in 2005, advanced by 1800 our capacity to manage lambs.
Also in 2005, we began the design and construction of a world class meat processing facility incorporating a Spanish thermoform machine, enabling us to produce gas flushed primal cuts and ready-for-sale portions. By the time it was completed in 2006, 1500 of our total daily lamb production was processed through this new plant.
Expansion is ongoing. Our extended reach into international markets has initiated further facilities analysis and upgrading of our capacities and capabilities is already underway again. We have three major works in progress at this time.
